Từ khi tôi bắt đầu theo đuổi nghệ thuật gốm, tôi luôn muốn tìm hiểu thêm về nghệ thuật Việt Nam nói chung và nghệ thuật đương đại Việt Nam. Tôi thường bị thu hút bởi những yếu tố hoặc chủ đề mang tính truyền thống: ví dụ như tranh dân gian, ứng dụng của những bộ màu truyền thống, v.v. Tôi luôn cố gắng hình dung xem mình có thể sử dụng những chất liệu dân gian này vào gốm như thế nào. Một cách tự nhiên, một trong những câu hỏi hiện lên trong đầu tôi là “Đã có ai thử làm cái này chưa?” Tôi bắt đầu google “Vietnamese sculptors” (nhà điêu khắc Việt Nam), “Vietnamese ceramics artists”, “Vietnamese ceramicists” (nghệ sĩ gốm Việt Nam), nhưng tôi không tìm dc nhiều thông tin với những từ khoá này. Tôi mở rộng hơn nội dung tìm kiếm thành “Vietnamese artists” (Nghệ sĩ Việt Nam), “contemporary Vietnamese artists” (nghệ sĩ đương đại Việt Nam”, tôi nhận dc nhiều kết quả hơn, nhưng cũng ko nhiều như mong đợi. Tôi nhận ra rằng có rất ít nguồn thông tin đáng tin cậy (trên internet), ít tài liệu tổng hợp đầy đủ về sự hình thành và phát triển của nghệ thuật đương đại Việt Nam. Đây đó có một vài bài viết ngắn, nhưng khó để có thể có một cái nhìn tồng quát về nghệ thuật đương đại Việt Nam, cũng như vị trí tương quan giữa nghệ thuật đương đại Việt Nam trong khu vực và trên thế giới.
Nguồn tham khảo về chủ đề này mà tôi có cơ hội tiếp xúc gần đây nhất và tạm coi như là nguồn thông tin tương đối khách quan là cuốn sách Eye Vietnam. Mặc dù đây là một sản phẩm tiếp thị của AIA, tôi cho phép mình tin rằng đây là một dự án xã hội nghiêm túc và chân thực. Đáng tiếc là cả cuốn sách chỉ có một đoạn ngắn về các nghệ sĩ điêu khắc Việt Nam, và không có hình ảnh nào về tác phẩm của họ. Tranh dường như là hình thức nghệ thuật phổ biến nhất, tiếp theo là lắp đặt (installation art – tôi ko chắc dịch là “lắp đặt” có chính xác ko), và biểu diễn (performance). Tôi cố gắng tìm hiểu xem tại sao điêu khắc gốm không hề hay chưa phổ biến ở Việt Nam, và tôi xây dựng những “giả thuyết” của riêng mình để lí giải cho việc ba hình thức nghệ thuật kia được các nghệ sĩ ở Việt Nam lựa chọn nhiều hơn. Thứ nhất, dụng cụ và nguồn tài liệu tham khảo cho việc vẽ tranh có sẵn hơn và dễ được nhập vào Việt Nam hơn. Nhập ở đây có thể hiểu là nhập khẩu, hoặc cầm tay, xách tay từ nơi khác về. Nghệ thuật hai chiều cũng gần gũi hơn với mọi người, nghĩa là mọi người từ lâu đã tiếp xúc với nhiều loại hình hai chiều (trên mặt phẳng) như viết, vẽ tranh dân gian, đọc sách báo, v.v. Installation thì khá linh động; ko có giới hạn nào trong việc lựa chọn chất liệu hay bối cảnh, không gian cho các tác phẩm của mình. Performance, nghệ thuật biểu diễn – theo tôi hiểu cũng có thể rất linh động vì cơ thể bạn là trung tâm của hình thức nghệ thuật này. Cũng vì những lí do này mà các hình thức nghệ thuật khác như video, tương tác, đa phương tiện (multi-media) cũng quen thuộc và dễ tiếp cận hơn với các nghệ sĩ và khán giả.
Điêu khắc gốm thì hơi khác – và có nhiều lí do mà hình thức này chưa thực sự phổ biến. Đầu tiên là lí do về mặt hậu cần, vận chuyển. Đất sét là chất liệu mà bản thân nó cần có một quá trình sản xuất và phân phối riêng. Thêm vào đó, quá trình tạo ra một sản phẩm gốm gồm nhiều công đoạn và cần đến một số thiết bị đặc thù như lò nung; và người nghệ sĩ phải dc đào tạo và có kinh nghiệm vận hành, sử dụng những thiết bị này. Điêu khắc, dù là từ gốm, đá hay bất cứ chất liệu nào khác, là nghệ thuật ba chiều – một hình thức rất khác với 2D. Điêu khắc chân dung khác hoàn toàn vẽ một bức tranh chân dung. Đã có lúc tôi dựng tượng chân dung với tư duy vẽ tranh – và sản phẩm là một thảm hoạ dở khóc dở cười. Tôi cũng tin rằng điêu khắc đương đại cần có một tư duy và kỹ năng khác so với điêu khắc theo kiểu truyền thống (như tượng phật).
Một yếu tố quan trọng khác ko thể ko nhắc tới, đó là một hình thức nghệ thuật có trở nên phổ biến hay không phụ thuộc vào bối cảnh lịch sử và xã hội tại từng thời điểm. Ở Việt Nam, Đổi Mới là mốc lịch sử có tác động mạnh nhất tới sự phát triển của nghệ thuật Việt Nam. Đổi Mới diễn ra vào những năm 80 – là khi đất nước mở cửa đón nhận những ảnh hưởng văn hoá từ nước ngoài. Đổi Mới có ý nghĩa chính trị, kinh tế, xã hội và văn hoá. Trước Đổi Mới, nghệ sĩ là những người theo chủ nghĩa lý tưởng và phần lớn các tác phẩm của họ thể hiện một thế giới lý tưởng, lãng mạn với những vật thể đáng yêu. Sau Đổi Mới, nghệ sĩ dưới ảnh hưởng của văn hoá nước ngoài, bắt đầu tìm kiếm và khẳng định tiếng nói riêng của mình. Tác phẩm của họ phản ánh những thử thách, mâu thuẫn, xung đột – trong cuộc sống riêng của họ cũng như của đất nước. Thế hệ nghệ sĩ “làn sóng thứ ba” có mối quan hệ tốt với những cộng đồng nước ngoài; họ nhận dc những sự hỗ trợ đáng kể từ các đại sứ quán, các quỹ và trung tâm văn hoá, các nghệ sĩ trong nhiều mặt: không gian triển lãm, hỗ trợ tài chính, quảng bá ở nước ngoài. Sự phát triển của nhưng nghệ sĩ này dẫn đến sự hình thành nền tảng và sự tồn tại của nền nghệ thuật đương đại của Việt Nam.
Tuy nhiên, nền tảng này tập trung chủ yếu vào một nhóm nhỏ các nghệ sĩ, và chính vì lí do đó mà trong một thập kỷ qua nghệ thuật đương đại Việt Nam chưa phát hiện ra nhiều nghệ sĩ mới. Trước năm 2000, các nghệ sĩ mới với các tác phẩm độc đáo được phát hiện và chào đón rất nồng nhiệt. Nhưng sau mốc này, nền nghệ thuật đương đại dường như tạm hài lòng với lớp nghệ sĩ này – những người tạo nên những tác phẩm có hơi hướng quốc tế, hiện đại.
Cá nhân tôi – để dễ tham khảo, tôi chia nghệ thuật đương đại Việt Nam thành hai dòng chính: dòng bác học/trừu tượng, và dòng thực tế. Dòng bác học & trừu tượng được phát triển bởi các nghệ sĩ sinh những năm đầu 80s trở về trước. Nội dung của dòng này có một tầng ý nghĩa mang tính triết học – mỗi tác phẩm nghệ thuật là phương tiện để người nghệ sĩ thể hiện ý kiến, cảm xúc, thái độ của mình về một vấn đề nào đó. Việt Nam vẫn đang chuyển từ thời kỳ của một nền văn hoá truyền thống, có phần phong kiến – sang giai đoạn xã hội cởi mở và chấp nhận một lối sống mới, “thoáng” hơn. Những vấn đề được các nghệ sĩ đương đại đề cập đến thường là những vấn đề xã hội; các nghệ sĩ thường đặt ra những câu hỏi, tìm câu trả lời, muốn bày tỏ quan điểm của mình và đồng thời họ cũng ý thức được rằng họ chỉ có thể bày tỏ quan điểm của mình trong một chừng mực nhất định . Sự thể hiện qua các tác phẩm nghệ thuật của họ có thể rất trừu tượng. Trong nhiều trường hợp, các tác phẩm trừu tượng đến mức chúng chỉ có thể được hiểu và đánh giá cao bởi một nhóm nhỏ những người hoặc nghệ sĩ có cùng nền tảng. Nhóm nghệ sĩ này thường là một nhóm nhỏ nhưng khăng khít – và rất khó để những nghệ sĩ mới hơn, trẻ hơn hoà nhập một cách nhanh chóng.
Bên cạnh đó, dòng thực tế, theo quan sát của tôi, đại đa số là các nghệ sĩ trẻ, sinh từ giữa năm 80s trở về sau. Cách thể hiện của họ ít trừu tượng hơn, nguyên liệu sử dụng cũng đơn giản hơn, và ý nghĩa các tác phẩm của họ cũng thẳng thắn hơn. Tôi thấy khá ngạc nhiên và thích thú khi nhận ra có một số không nhỏ những nghệ sĩ trẻ làm việc theo đơn đặt hàng riêng khá thường xuyên. Dòng thực tế dễ hiểu, dễ tiếp thu hơn với đại đa số công chúng. Các tác phẩm của dòng này thường được chia sẻ trên các mạng xã hội dễ hơn và nhanh hơn. Tuy nhiên các nghệ sĩ trong dòng này cũng phải rất vất vả để duy trì được hình ảnh, uy tín của mình. Dòng nghệ thuật thực tế, theo ý kiến của riêng tôi, là hình thức nghệ thuật gần gũi, phổ biến nhất với một người Việt Nam điển hình; nhưng cũng có thể những tác phẩm trong nhóm này, trong một bối cảnh khác, lại ko được coi là “nghệ thuật”, vì “nghệ thuật” đôi khi phải có ẩn ý và ít có tính ứng dụng. Tuy nhiên, đây chỉ là cách hiểu và ý kiến của riêng tôi vào thời điểm này. Những quan điểm của tôi về nghệ thuật và nghệ thuật đương đại của Việt Nam chắc chắn sẽ còn thay đổi nhiều.
Tôi cũng đã học được rằng nền nghệ thuật đương đại Việt Nam có bốn mảng chính:
- Mảng nghệ thuật được bảo trợ bởi chính phủ: bao gồm các tác phẩm mang tính tuyên truyền, một trong những hệ quả từ thời kì Xô Viết. Đây là mảng mạnh nhất vì nó được bảo hộ và đầu tư bởi chính phủ. Có những tượng đài được chính phủ đầu tư cả chục triệu đô la để xây dựng nên.
- Mảng thương mại: bao gồm các tác phẩm được mua bán bởi các galleries, những nhà môi giới, sưu tầm tranh, tác phẩm nghệ thuật. Một trong những vấn đề của mảng nghệ thuật này là sự sao chép và giả các tác phẩm gốc – như đã được báo New York Times nhắc đến.
- Mảng được sự hỗ trợ bởi các đại sứ: đây là mảng cho các nghệ sĩ thuộc “làn sóng thứ ba” – những người chịu ảnh hưởng và sẵn sàng đón nhập những yếu tố quốc tế.
- Các nghệ sĩ độc lập: là những người ko thuộc ba nhóm trên.
Nếu tôi coi mình là một nghệ sĩ mới thì tôi cũng hơi băn khoăn ko biết mình đứng ở đâu trong bốn nhóm trên. Tôi là một nghệ sĩ đọc lập; một phần vì tôi tự học và tôi ở nước ngoài. Nhưng cũng vì lí do đó mà tôi ko nằm trong nhóm thứ ba hay nhóm thứ hai, và tôi chắc chắn ko nằm trong nhóm thứ nhất. Tôi muốn đóng góp ít nhiều cho nghệ thuật đương đại Việt Nam, tuy nhiên để hiểu dc tình hình và xác định được hướng đi đúng, nhất là khi tôi ko ở Việt Nam – là việc ko dễ. Mặc dù tôi bắt đầu tiếp cận nghệ thuật ở Mỹ, tôi luôn coi mình là một nghệ sĩ Việt nam và tôi hi vọng với những tác phẩm của mình, tôi sẽ có cơ hội quảng bá và đại diện cho nghệ thuật đương đại Việt Nam ở cộng đồng quốc tế.
