A keen curiosity, a strong self-awareness, and an earnest desire to promote contemporary Vietnamese art to international audiences are Thuong’s motivation as she started her uncommon path in ceramics. Born and raised in Hanoi, Thuong Tran Lock, also friendly known as Thuong Tran, attended National University of Singapore for her bachelor degree. She also earned an MBA degree from Tel Aviv University in Israel, and a Master Degree in International Marketing from HULT Business School in San Francisco, California.
Although not conventionally trained in the field, Thuong self learnt about ceramics intensively and her path as a ceramic artist gradually flourishes. Her international, multicultural exposure – paired with the Hanoian charm and grace that she grew up with, equipped her a unique foundation as she approaches contemporary ceramics. Thuong’s background in business, from starting her own business to joining a Silicon Valley tech startup, also greatly contributes to the distinctive mix between modernity and tradition in her art.
Putting every day’s stress and complication aside whenever she enters her studio, Thuong indulges herself in this personal space as she materializes her imagination. Building things that bring back beautiful memories, make people excited and smile – to her that’s happiness. She hopes her works would bring simple surprises to the audience and reveal the unaware connections we all have with each other.
