In Other Words

My first solo show – a milestone 🥳

I have never been so excited seeing my name written on a wall

The most special thing is to have my mom here at the show opening. I had three degrees and two graduation ceremonies, but for different reasons my mom never had a chance to attend any of them. Throughout my career, she never interferes with my choice of what job I was going to take, although I think she probably questioned and worried a lot. Last week, thanks to our in house travel agent (aka my husband) and with very little planning, my mom flew to the US two days before the opening. I hope seeing my solo show and that my work sells quickly will make her less worried about my career choice 🥲 Less – because she will never stop 🥹
I am very proud of this first solo show. I hope she is proud of me 🎈

With my mom and my toddler at the show opening last weekend

A big thank to my cousin’s family in Seattle for always being with me at every important event in my life – this one is the latest; my girlfriends in Portland and their families for coming to the opening; my other (artist) friends who supported and believed more than I did that the show would happen. When I had my first group show last year, I told my best friend (whose name is also Thuong) that my work got in the smallest gallery in Portland. She said “One step at a time. This small gallery will take you to a bigger one.” She was right.
I wish my family and my in-law family could see the show. My father-in-law said; his mom – an artist, would have been so proud of me for having my work at a gallery ❤️

Last but not least, I feel grateful to my husband and my adopted daughter, as I call Helen Garcia – our family’s au pair. These two always do their best so that I can have my time at the studio.

It has been a great learning experience. I get to spend time improving my work and techniques, I forced myself to reach out and work with other artists, and I learned how to work with a gallery. This is a chance for me to understand how galleries bring their values to help artists, how galleries promote artists’ works, the kind of connections galleries have with their customers which would be hard for artists to develop by themselves. There are still a lot of things for me to think about when it comes to working with galleries. My next show is in July and I am excited to start working on the new collection. Hopefully, it will be a few more intensive months of working, learning, and thinking.

My first solo show In Other Words (with a modest number of works – by the way) is currently showing until May 7th, at Stephanie Chefas Projects – in Portland, Oregon. If you’re in town, stop by and check it out! 🥳
