I have been quiet, too quiet. But I am still here and I am back. So much has happened since my last post, and I hope if you follow my blog you also follow my Instagram – where you have probably been updated about what I’ve been up to.
The biggest news is I am now a mother of a baby girl. An, my daughter, is now ten months old. I hope that explains my absence. And months before I gave birth to An, I was busy wrapping up some last orders which are also some successful experiments, creations that I have ever had.
The second major change was that starting in 2020 I became a full-time artist. I was already pregnant with An then. I had a happy pregnancy because I got to do what I loved, and I had a lot of flexibility with my time. Basically, that means if I am tired of working on my ceramic balloons, I can rest, eat, nap, walk, etc. do anything I want to relax and take care of myself. It was also when the pandemic started, so the only place out of the house that I could go to was my studio. I had a lot of time to try and experiment with new things. As you can see in the photo above, it was me and An in An’s nursery. I made those balloons for An – of course. The classic round piece was one of my experiments where I used stencils to create those red hearts. I thought the piece was lovely and I decided to keep it for An.
Then I was home for three months with An. It was hard; not much because I had to take care of a newborn. The pandemic made me felt very lonely. My mom planned to come and stay with us for few months around An’s birth to help out (that is what every Vietnamese mother would do when she has a grandchild), but she couldn’t. Until now she still has not met An. My parents-in-law were with us for three weeks when An was just born, but when they had to go back to the East Coast, we did not know when we would be able to see them again. My husband and I took care of the baby by ourselves, but Max still had to work so during the day it was 100% me. We did not know when we would see our families again, when we would meet our friends or anyone else again. But fortunately, my husband came up with some plans for us and we got through the toughest time. He found a caregiver for An so that I could go back to the studio and we went to stay with my parents-in-law for Thanksgiving until the new year.
Even though we had a caregiver for An, it was still not possible for me to go back to the studio full time. I breastfeed An so in the middle of the day and middle of the afternoon I had to be home and pump. I spend typically 3-4 hours/day at the studio, 4 days/week. The other half of the day I stay at home, do chores around the house and practice watercolor. My husband, again, made it possible for me to do more arts. He turned one of our bedrooms into an office for me so I can store my art supplies and do some watercolor painting. These helped me to create new routines, find a balance between taking care of An and returning to making ceramic balloons.
I am also switching from taking custom orders to making ready-to-ship items. Custom orders usually come with deadlines; which I cannot accommodate at the moment. On the other hand, ready-to-ship items allow me to do what I want (compared to do what the customers want), and to try new things – without any pressure from anyone.
Above are some updates from me in this blog post. Although I always wish I had more time to work on balloons, I also enjoy spending time at home, taking care of An, watching her grows. I can’t wait to show An how much she can do with clay!
