You may have seen in some of the previous posts a photo of two metallic balloons I made for a customer in Panama. Andrea – the customer, is a popular pastry chef in Panama. Andrea was pregnant with her child, who – according to her – would “arrive” at any time. She was getting her nursery ready and she’s been wanting ceramic balloons for a long time, and one day destiny brought my photos to her Instagram feed.
I browsed through Andrea’s Instagram feed, and as much as I was impressed by her talent in pastry, I was worried whether my balloons would meet her high standard. Andrea has a very “strange” deadline, she seemed to need the balloons very soon; but after I explained how much time I need to make them she let said she can wait, but she still said she would want them sooner than later.
I get to chat with Andrea more as I started the making. And I learned that in Panama, the tradition is everyone would come and visit the baby in the first two weeks – so she must have her nursery ready before going into labor. As an artist herself, she wants to have some art pieces in the nursery so that her family and guest not only can have a good time with the baby, but can also enjoy and adore the art.
And she said she is due any time now. I remembered one weekend I sent her a message on Friday evening, but I never heard back from her until Sunday evening. Usually she was quite responsive with messages. And I thought she was giving birth to the baby already. But then it turned out that she observes Shabbat; which means no electronic devices from Sunday sunset to Saturday sunset.
I also took advantage of the fact that Andrea does not check her phone on the weekend to do some extra work for her. The first batch of balloons did not last the glaze firing, but I did not want her to worry – so over the weekend I worked on the second batch. By the time she went back online, not only she knew about the problem, but also the solution.
Andrea was very encouraging. She is also an artist, she understands how much effort is put into any handmade product. She understands that anything can go wrong at any minute, and that sometimes we need some luck to have things done. So she is very patient with me. And she likes the ceramic balloons because they are handmade, because they are not perfect. There was one piece that did not come out as I wanted, and I insisted to make a new piece for her. She asked if I minded sending the “defected piece” to her; and I said “It is not good enough, and since you’re so nice to me – I would only send you the best pieces”. She said that I was being too critical about my own work, she loved handmade stuff so she would still want the “defected” piece, to hang in her studio. At the end I added an extra balloon to her shipment. She was not the only one who was excited about the balloons, but her whole family was, too, even the handyman who helped her hanging all the balloons in her nursery!
I was glad and relieved that the balloons were in place before she gave birth to the baby, and that she was pleased with them. My responsibility “ended” there, but I also wanted to know when the baby would arrive. The only way I’ve been in touch with Andrea was via Instagram. But around that time my mom visited me from Vietnam for ten days to celebrate my birthday. We took her on a trip to Grand Canyon so I did not spend too much time on social media for more than two weeks.
When I returned to my daily routine, I still saw Andrea sharing videos on her story – baking related. I messaged her asking if the baby has arrived. She replied: “Yess thank God he was born on the 8th, a baby boy”. 👶🏻
I was surprised and immediately felt even more special of how Andrea and I connected, because July 8th is also my birthday. I hope she didn’t think I was joking when I told her that. As positive and bubbly as Andrea always is, she said she and Roberto – her son, will think of me whenever it is July 8th. She also happily shared with me that the balloons were the center of the attention. It’s actually the baby who is the center of everyone’s attention, but it’s still nice to receive such a compliment.
Knowing that a baby grows up seeing the balloons I made from his crib every day, is special and meaningful to me. 🥰 And that the mother is pleased with what I make – for her and for her child – makes me happy. Besides all the technical knowledge and skill I need to master, this personal connection with the customers is what motivates me to perfect my work.
